Plymouth is just 20 miles from Looe and has a rich history – you can explore the cobbled streets of the Barbican and follow the footsteps of the Pilgrim Fathers, take a boat ride over the Tamar to the magnificent Grade II listed Mount Edgcumbe House and Gardens or discover the real stories behind the history on show at Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery and the Plymouth Mayflower Exhibition.

Local to us here in Looe, there’s Antony in Torpoint. Stunning grounds that border the Lynher Estuary include formal garden with topiary, a knot garden, modern sculptures, national collection of Daylilies and woodland gardens. Antony was recently used as the backdrop for Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland.

Cotehele, St Dominick, near Saltash is a beautiful Tudor House steeped in history and legends. Gardens include formal terraces and Valley Garden. It’s also home to the restored Tamar sailing barge, the Shamrock.

If you want more ideas, why not visit the National Trust website, www.nationaltrust.org.uk.

Anyone see Pentillie Caste on Channel 4′s Country House Rescue – well if you fancy seeing it in the flesh, so to speak, it’s at St Mellion near Saltash – again, not far from here. For more information, go to www.pentillie.co.uk.

Did you know that Looe has three current TASTE OF THE SOUTH WEST Gold award winning restaurants in its midsts? Trawler’s on The Quay, Barclay House (with also has 2 AA Rosettes), The Plough at Duloe (okay… so just outside of Looe!). With Michelin star chef, Nathan Outlaw, due to open on the Quayside in Looe in Spring, it reaffirms Looe’s growing reputation as a destination venue for any foodie.

We also have other great restaurants such as Squid Ink, Mawgans, Morrells, a fab Thai – Ocean and Earth, Papa Nino’s (Italian), Zute’s (Looe’s newest eaterie – try the fantastic Cornish clotted cream creme brulee), and many more. The Courtyard is ideal for a spot of al fresco dining (does fab fish and chips).

Looe’s food and drink festival takes place on the 29th/30th June 2013. A marquee in the Millpool, overlooking the stunning East Looe River, will play host to food and drink demonstrations by local, award winning chefs and some of the best food producers and suppliers in the South West.
